NASA to add fifth engine to SLS Core Stage, because four looks bad

Today, NASA announced they will add a fifth RS-25 engine to the core stage of SLS, after receiving hateful letters from many engineers working on SLS: “This has annoyed me for years. There’s an empty space in the middle, why not put another engine there,” says Lead Engineer Shaun McEnginor.

For NASA, this means moving the launch window by another decade or two and repeating the Green Run test.

“It’s worth it,” McEnginor repeats, “it won’t be finished anyway”. Meanwhile, NASA’s action raises questions for many people:

“SLS was never intended to look cool,” says a stranger we met at NASA’s Stennis Space Center.
